ErinOak Kids in Mississauga

Butterfly Paediatric in Mississauga

  • Provides one-on-one physical therapy/occupational therapy.  I was surprised at how good their equipment was, including parallel bars, treadmill with harness, electrical stimulation and a rock-climbing wall!  They also provide group classes.

Smile Therapy for Kids in Concord

aim2walk in Mississauga

  • Extensive facilities that also includes a Locomat.  Great for older kids as they do not have experience/equipment for little ones.

United States Physical Therapy Centres

Because there are so few cases of spinal cord injury in children in Canada, we found US to be a great place for intense physical therapy.  In the locations below you will find equipment for paediatric spinal cord injury that you will not find in Canadian centres - even the public ones.  They have also seen more cases of spinal cord injury and therefore have refined the physical therapy techniques specific to spinal cord injury.

Shriner's Hospital

  • This was the first place we went to for intense therapy.  There are two locations that specialize in SCI - Chicago and Philadelphia.   The Chicago location is closer to Toronto.  Shriners provides care and intense therapy - free of charge for those whose insurance does not cover this. There is a chapter in Toronto that will organize your travel (flight & accommodations).  We go with Noah every 5 months for 2-3 weeks of intense therapy.

Frazier Rehab Institute

  • Provides a unique approach to physical therapy.  There is some research from the Frazier Institute that repetitive step-like motions over treadmill and over-ground, with the correct cueing, can engage the Central Pattern Generator and potentially allow a SCI patient to walk functionally.   This approach requires 4 individuals working on the patient at once, therefore this rehab is very expensive.

Project Walk

  • A group of centres across US specializing in paralysis recovery.  There is a lot of information about them online, including photos and videos, and success stories.

Core

  • Centre in Florida that is similar to Project Walk.  We are taking Noah there in May 2018 for intense rehabilitation.
